The Other Side of Portland

Developers and city "leaders" are destroying Portland, bit by bit.  They are demolishing and allowing to be demolished perfectly good houses to put up ugly monstrsosities.    They call themselves cute names like Green Gable Designs.  Yeah, right.  Let's rename that one "Housing from Hell".

Here is a map of all the permits for demolitions this year.  People are upset.

Here are two of the nine houses slated for demolition by city permit this week.

9342 N MOHAWK AVE, 97203 – Year built: 1923 – Owner: CHESTER P NELSON and CHRISTINE L NELSON – Applicant: MICHAEL VAUGHN, URBAN REVIVAL LLC – Contractor: MICHAEL VAUGHN, URBAN REVIVAL LLC – Application received 4/8/15, permit issued 4/6/16

It is heartbreaking to know these beautiful, historic homes are being demolished to accommodate new "MacMansions." I always enjoy the pictures of your home, your neighborhood, and the other places you visit. I lived in WA state for a few yrs (now landlocked in OK) and I think the Pacific Northwest is the most beautiful place I've ever seen. Looking forward to more posts from you.

It's not just McMansions. They are putting up apartment buildings that look like some ugly communist block in Russia..... often right next to a small lovely bungalow, taking all the light.

Portland city leaders used to care about trees and green and all that. Now it is all about accommodating the greedy developer.

Exactly the same thing happened in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's terrible there now.

It's sad that there is so little incentive to save the old homes. After spending so much money on our home improving and replacing the plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc, I totally get where they're coming from. But they shouldn't be able to build monstrosities on the same lot. They should be able to build a house that is only barely bigger than the one being taken down.

There are so many new products that restore and harden old wood now and make it stronger than it was originally. All of these houses could be fixed. I feel ashamed for the United States. We let people tear down our history and culture. I'm with you, girl!
