Project progress

John has been busy working on his bathroom cabinet.  It doesn't look very different to me but he assures me that it has a lot more structure than it did.

I suppose my project looks much the same, too.  But it has batting and backing and is being quilted.  It's structurally stronger as well.

At our house today

I am putting the binding on my quilt.  It's all finished except for the binding.  I like to do handwork on the dark days while I watch a video.  It's light enough to see and dark enough to watch.

John is putting together the face frame for the bathroom cabinet.  I love this part of the project.

I am also playing with strips and thinking of another small piece.  Maybe a pillow.  It seems we can't have too many pillows these days.  And thank you, strip fairy.  I am having so much fun with the new strips.

And here is another simple quilt top made from strips.  I think it has a 1940's look color wise.  I've picked the backing.  It's big enough that I'll have to do it on the floor I think.  That means keeping the cats out from somewhere while I make the quilt sandwich.

Bathroom Project

After more than a year, John is finally moving on the bathroom project again.  He finished his drawings and his construction drawings.  He milled lumber for the face frame.  He did a materials list.  I think there is hope....

This is the cabinet.  There will be one sink.  The current bathroom has two sinks which is a waste of space to us.  I know, most if not all of you are shouting "RESALE, RESALE!!".  But we are doing this for US and not for some imagined tick mark in a real estate listing.   Remember we are the people who have no dishwasher and no garbage disposal.  They aren't things we need or want.

The myth of resale is just a myth.

There are pages and pages of detailed measurements and construction methods.

Bathroom project progress

Our bathroom project has been moving pretty slowly. We've had some discussions and John pretty much settled on a design for the vanity he is going to build. And today we bought our sink. It's like a pedestal sink that sits on a counter top. I really like it.  Here it is!

And here is how it will look installed.  We don't have the room for a pedestal sink and a cabinet.  This sink will "sit" on top of the vanity countertop.  Pretty cool.

Upstairs bathroom project update

I wrote about our simple bathroom update here.  The shower has been professionally cleaned and has new floor tile.  DeWolf Tile did a great job.

The new bubbled glass shower door is in.  We got the shower door at ESP Supply.  We like it and it hides the old shower wall tile, which we do not like.

It feels great to be in the shower space.  The bubble glass makes the shower soft and nice.  The bathroom looks like this through the bubble glass.

Upstairs bathroom project

We've been pretty busy for several months between the garden and getting ready to paint the house.  But now some other projects are underway.

We've started work on the upstairs bathroom.   The bathroom was remodeled by the previous owner about twenty years ago and it wasn't the best quality job.  We are doing a relatively simple and inexpensive bathroom remodel.... We don't want to go through the process or expense of getting all new tile so we are leaving most of the tile in place.   Most of the tile is in good shape and fairly innocuous though not our taste.  The shower floor tile is failing so we are replacing it.  We are also getting new shower doors.  John will make a new vanity and we will get a new faucet and sink (just one sink, not two).  John gets a lot of say in this remodel because this is mostly his bathroom.

I already got two rag rugs made for the floor.  I bought them on Etsy from the Vermont Rug Farm.

The state of the bathroom now:

The shower has hard to clean sliding doors with a failing track... the new doors will not be clear glass.  We don't really want to showcase the tile in our shower.

The vanity screams cheap

 The faucets are really falling apart and it is more than cosmetic

These days most kitchens and bathrooms get remodeled more often than every twenty years.  However, old kitchens and bathrooms held up much longer than today's shoddy workmanship and materials.
